ABOUT: LACI is building a more diverse and inclusive ecosystem that integrates women, people of color and other under-represented groups into the cleantech sector. To do this, we are recruiting candidates for a workforce development pipeline to LACI startup companies and the tech sector overall. The LACI APC Fellowship Program is a multi-tiered workforce training pipeline program to provide promising candidates with technical training, interpersonal skills, and industry-recognized certifications to help them succeed.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: MAY 24

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Los Angeles County Resident
  • Interested in Clean Technology
  • Part of an underrepresented group
  • Currently underemployed or unemployed
  • Proof of low-to-moderate income status
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Available at least 20 hours a week for up to 12 weeks

AWARD: Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of $800 if selected to participate in the 12-week internship.

Opportunity Scholars Public Health Academy

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

  • PHA is a 4-week summer academy program for juniors and seniors (current sophomores and juniors) students, primarily from South LA, interested in health careers. PHA was developed to establish a meaningful educational experiences to prepare students for success in college.
  • The program takes places Tuesday through Saturday during the summer months and includes an internship during the school year. Students who successfully complete the summer component program in its entirety will receive a stipend. This is a full year academic program and students will be able to take advantage of an SAT Preparation course in the fall. Additionally, students are assigned a mentor that works with them for the entire school year.

ELIGIBILITY: Current high school sophomores and juniors

USC Viterbi Discover Engineering Summer Program

In this college course, students will explore various disciplines of engineering through academic lectures and classroom discussions. Students will gain practical experience through hands-on projects which involve designing, building and testing and will learn how to conduct research using design thinking and the engineering design process. Students receive 3 units of USC elective credit upon successful course completion.

  • Age group: Completed at least 9th grade by June 17, 2018
  • Schedule: Mon-Fri, 9AM - 4PM
  • Cost: $8,534 (Residential), $6,059 (Commuter)
  • Scholarships: Currently not available – the Summer 2018 scholarship deadline for military families has passed.
  • Housing: Live on USC’s main campus or commute
  • Requirements: Students who will not have completed Algebra 2 before summer 2019 but who wish to be considered for this course must submit the Algebra 2 Waiver Form with their application.

USC Viterbi Mission Engineering Summer Program

In this two week seminar, students work on different aspects of engineering projects from design to completion covering aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer science and mechanical engineering disciplines.

  • Dates: June 17, 2019 – June 28, 2019
  • Application deadline: Applications accepted on a rolling basis until May 1st or until all slots are filled
  • Age group: Current 10th or 11th grade
  • Schedule: Mon-Fri, 9AM - 5PM
  • Cost: $750
  • Scholarships: FULL scholarship for all low-income students

  • Requirements: Min 3.0 GPA in college prep courses, and completed Algebra 2 or higher with at least a B by June 2019

Students will take a deep dive into subject matter focused on programming through the creation of mobile apps and 3D video games and interactive stories using Unity.

In this week-long technology day camp, middle school girls from under-served communities will participate in technology mentorship and app development with industry experts, USC students and staff to increase their education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

USC Viterbi Energy of STEM Summer Program

 

Energy of STEM is a six-day learning adventure filled with hands-on activities in every workshop. Educationally disadvantaged children in grades 4-12 will work in small groups within each workshop to study Aerodynamics, Physics, Coding, Energy, Electronics, and much more in an interactive hands-on environment. Workshops are led by industry professionals and educators who work in the areas of science, mathematics and engineering.

ABOUT: Women of Distinction is a program for high school seniors that highlights the opportunities at Smith for African American, Latina, Asian American, and Native American students. Admission is competitive.

ELIGIBILITY: Current high school juniors

AWARDS: Smith will provide round-trip transportation, meals, and accommodations for all participants.

DATE: The program will take place on October 18-20, 2019.

Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI)

 
 
Google's Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI) is a three-week introduction to computer science for graduating high school seniors with a passion for technology — especially students from historically underrepresented groups in the field.
 
CSSI is not your average summer camp. It's an intensive, interactive, hands-on and fun program that seeks to inspire the tech leaders and innovators of tomorrow by supporting the study of computer science, software engineering and other closely related subjects.

Amazon Future Engineer

 

Amazon Future Engineer is a comprehensive childhood-to-career program to inspire, educate, and train children and young adults from underserved and low-income communities to pursue careers in computer science. Amazon aims to inspire more than 10 million kids each year to explore computer science, fund CS courses for over 100,000 underprivileged young people in 2,000 low-income high schools across the U.S., and award 100 students from under-served communities pursuing degrees in computer science with four-year $10,000 annual scholarships, as well as internships at Amazon to gain work experience.
